In response to growing concerns over the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Government has proactively established a special ICU ward in Jammu to address potential cases of the respiratory virus. This development comes as India reports five HMPV cases, sparking nationwide discussions on preparedness and surveillance.

HMPV Cases in India: Current Status

Recently, two suspected HMPV cases emerged in Nagpur, Maharashtra, while three confirmed cases have been documented—two in Karnataka and one in Gujarat. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under its respiratory illness surveillance program, has been closely monitoring these occurrences. Experts highlight that HMPV spreads via respiratory droplets, typically peaking during winter and early spring.

Union Health Ministry’s Reassurance

Union Health Minister JP Nadda has sought to allay public fears, affirming that HMPV is not a new virus and India’s healthcare system is well-prepared to manage any challenges. 

“Health experts have clarified that HMPV is not a new virus… There is no reason to worry. We are closely monitoring the situation,” he stated. 

The Indian healthcare infrastructure, supported by ICMR and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), is equipped to respond to any potential escalation.

Measures in Gujarat and J&K

In Gujarat, a two-month-old infant from Rajasthan tested positive for HMPV and was transferred to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel has confirmed that precautionary measures are in place, reiterating that there is no cause for panic.

Similarly, the J&K Government’s decision to set up a dedicated ICU ward in Jammu showcases its proactive approach. This facility aims to provide enhanced care for patients, particularly children and the elderly, who are more susceptible to severe symptoms due to low immunity. Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, emphasized that HMPV infections generally resolve within 5–7 days with symptom-based treatment, as no specific vaccines or antiviral medications are currently available.

J&K Health Minister Chaudhary Lal Singh stated, 

“We are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our citizens. The establishment of a special ICU ward in Jammu is part of our preparedness to tackle any emerging health situation effectively. Collaboration with private healthcare providers is also on the cards to strengthen our response.”

Nationwide Surveillance and Advisory

The Union Health Ministry has urged states and union territories to strengthen their surveillance of respiratory illnesses, including influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI). Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava chaired a virtual meeting with state health officials and experts from ICMR, NCDC, and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). The meeting emphasized:

• Enhancing public awareness campaigns on preventive measures, such as maintaining hand hygiene, avoiding contact with symptomatic individuals, and practicing respiratory etiquette.
• Utilizing diagnostic facilities available across ICMR laboratories for early detection and management of HMPV.

Although no unusual rise in ILI or SARI cases has been observed so far, experts stress the importance of vigilance during the winter months, when respiratory illnesses are more prevalent.
