Kerala has reported its second case of Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) after a man who returned from the United Arab Emirates tested positive for the virus in Ernakulam. The patient, currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kochi, is reported to be in stable condition. This latest case follows the state’s first report of Mpox on September 23, which involved a 38-year-old man from Malappuram, also returning from the UAE.
In response to the outbreak, Kerala’s Health Minister Veena George confirmed that preventive measures have been swiftly implemented. A detailed contact list of the infected individual has been prepared, and isolation facilities have been set up across all districts to curb the spread of the disease. The state’s health department has urged individuals with symptoms such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes to seek medical care immediately.
Since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in 2022, India has recorded 30 confirmed cases of the disease. In light of this, the Union Health Ministry has issued an advisory, asking all states and union territories to assess their public health preparedness. Senior officials have been directed to review healthcare facilities at both state and district levels to ensure readiness for any further outbreaks.
Mpox typically spreads through prolonged close contact with an infected person. While the infection usually resolves within two to four weeks with supportive care, it can lead to medical complications in some cases. Public health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, working to prevent further transmission in the country.
As India grapples with multiple ongoing health crises, including surges in vector-borne diseases such as Dengue and Chikungunya, the focus remains on bolstering preventive measures and healthcare preparedness to mitigate the impact of these outbreaks.
