The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), a central government health insurance initiative, has successfully issued over 26 crore Ayushman cards nationwide, according to a statement from the health ministry. Uttar Pradesh leads with 4 crore cards, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 3.69 crore and Chhattisgarh with 2.04 crore. Notably, 49% of the beneficiaries are female.

The scheme, overseen by the National Health Authority (NHA), has catered to 5.7 crore hospital admissions, amounting to a cost of over Rs 70,000 crore. Offering a health cover of Rs 5 lakh annually for each family, it addresses secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation needs for 12 crore families. The goal is to ensure every beneficiary possesses an Ayushman card, central to the Ayushman Bhav campaign aimed at comprehensive coverage of central health programmes.

Since the campaign’s inception on 13th September, the NHA’s platform has received over 1.5 crore Ayushman card applications. As of October, 86 lakh cards have been produced. The recently introduced ‘Ayushman App’ facilitates card generation with a self-verification feature, allowing users to create a card in just four steps, eliminating the need to visit a centre. The app has been downloaded over 26 lakh times post-launch.
