Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic, has unveiled a state-of-the-art radiation therapy department. This step is part of the hospital’s strategic goal to establish itself as a primary cancer care centre.
The facility is designed to serve up to 30 patients daily, providing enhanced access to essential cancer treatment services in Abu Dhabi. Dr Daniel Chamberlain, the Chair of Radiation Oncology at SSMC, emphasised the hospital’s commitment to prioritising patients’ needs and to expanding its range of cancer treatments. The department promises to deliver external beam radiation therapy with unparalleled precision and innovation.

This development is a significant milestone as it’s the first radiation therapy department inaugurated in Abu Dhabi city by Seha, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company. A pre-existing service was available in Al Ain. Dr Chamberlain stated that this would greatly benefit patients by reducing the need for extended commutes, which often span several weeks.

A team of esteemed specialists, encompassing radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation technologists, and oncology nurses, will oversee the department, ensuring top-tier, comprehensive, and patient-centric care.
Dr Naser Ammash, CEO of SSMC, expressed that broadening cancer treatment services is crucial for their mission to deliver global-standard care to their patients.
According to data shared by SSMC, cancer claims over 9.6 million lives worldwide annually and remains the third predominant cause of death in the UAE.
