The Ministry of Ayush and the Ministry of Minority Affairs have collaborated to take a significant step in promoting and developing the Unani system of medicine in India. Under the centrally sponsored scheme called Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), the Ministry of Minority Affairs has approved a grant of Rs. 45.34 Crore. This grant aims to upgrade Unani Medicine facilities in Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Silchar, and Bengaluru.

The approved grant will be utilized to establish various facilities for Unani Medicine at the aforementioned locations. The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) has been granted a total amount of Rs. 35.52 crores, while the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) in Bengaluru has been sanctioned Rs. 9.81 crores.

Additionally, a center for fundamental research in Unani Medicine will be established at the National Research Institute of Unani Medicine for Skin Disorders in Hyderabad, with a cost of Rs. 16.05 crores. The Ministry has proposed a cost of Rs. 8.15 crores for a preclinical laboratory facility at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine in Chennai, Rs. 8.55 crores for a center of Ilaj bit Tadbeer (regimenal therapy) for musculoskeletal disorders at the Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine in Lucknow, and Rs. 2.75 crores for a center of Ilaj bit Tadbeer (regimenal therapy) for skin and lifestyle disorders at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine in Silchar.

NIUM in Bengaluru will receive Rs. 5.55 crores to establish a Vishram Girah for patients’ attendants, and Rs. 4.26 crores for a skill center of model Unani cosmetic care, a small-scale Unani pharmacy, and Unani crude drug storage.

The proposals were reviewed by the Empowered Committee of the Ministry of Minority Affairs in a meeting held on March 02, 2023. An amount of Rs. 4.86 crores, which is 25% of the total sanctioned cost, has already been released to CCRUM as the first installment for its three projects in Chennai, Lucknow, and Silchar. The grant for the CCRUM project in Hyderabad and the projects of NIUM, Bengaluru will be released once their Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are approved and other technicalities are finalized. PMJVK is a program focused on area development, aiming to create community infrastructure and basic amenities in identified areas.

Under the leadership of Union Minister of Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, senior officials from both ministries have discussed this matter, and Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, has further pursued the matter with Union Minister of Minority Affairs, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani. Through the joint efforts of both ministries, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has, for the first time, considered extending financial support to the cause of Unani Medicine.
