Cancer Support Centres

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Tackling the monster of Cancer, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced setting up of Cancer Support Centres across 12 districts of the state. This has been announced under the One District One Medical College scheme.

According to a state government official, the move will assure that the treatment for Cancer is available across the state. “Now, the cancer patients in Uttar Pradesh will not have to come to Lucknow every time to get proper treatment as these cancer support centres will not only provide them with all the required advice but also the treatment,” added the official.

Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is working on setting up 12 support centres (peripheral centres) for cancer patients. Speaking about the same, Dr Kirti Srivastava of the Radiotherapy Department of KGMU said, “The centres have been already established in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Kannauj, Saifai and Prayagraj. The doctors of these centres will also be given training.”

The 12 districts to have these peripheral centres include Sitapur, Barabanki, Rae Bareli, Gonda, Bahraich and Pratapgarh. These centres will be operated by the Radiotherapy Department of KGMU and the first screening of patients will be done at these centres only. After confirmation, the operation will be done in the medical college or district hospital.

Under its scheme ‘one district, one medical college’, the state government has spared no effort to establish at least one medical college in 59 districts of the state, while an announcement has been made regarding setting up of medical colleges in 16 districts on ‘Public-private partnership (PPP) model’.
