Rapid and rampant commercialization in chemotherapy has alarmed the health fraternity.
Indiscriminate use of high end radiation treatment in some corporate hospitals was viewed as ethical breach. Leading oncologist, Dr. P. Vijay Anand Reddy, Senior Consultant and Director, Apollo Cancer Hospital, expressed his shock and resentment. He observed that the hospital should explain the pros and cons of the high end treatment, besides the cost factor, to the patient and family members. Very often, oncologists prescribe very irresponsibly and take the patients for a ride. Poor patients are carried away by claims and advantages of high end treatment.
Dr.Reddy pointed out that around 20 percent cases required high end technology, precisely in treating brain tumour. Today the reverse is happening. More than 80 % patients are subjected to unwanted and expensive, high end radiation. A cheaper therapy would have been equally effective and saved the patients money.
