Three new fat removal technologies that are awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration should be available to patients by 2011. Two of the new technologies, Ultrashape and Liposonix, use ultrasound waves to break apart fat and the third technology, named Zeltiq, uses a form of fat removal called cryolipolysis, theplasticsurgerychannel.com reports. Ultrashape and Liposonix are put on the skin and ultrasound beams are focused on the fatty layer below the skin. One device causes the fat particles to explode while the other heats fat to move it out of the body. Zeltiq freezes the fat tissue, which takes about 90 days, and this causes crystallisation in the fat cells.
