The Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi scheme—officially known as the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP)—is significantly advancing affordable healthcare delivery in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. Launched in 2008, the Central government initiative provides quality-assured generic medicines at prices 50%–90% lower than branded counterparts through a widespread network of dedicated Jan Aushadhi Kendras. The scheme is implemented by the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI).
Across Chamoli, Jan Aushadhi Kendras are becoming an essential support system, particularly for patients managing chronic conditions. The Kendra situated inside the Karnaprayag sub-district hospital has seen sustained daily footfall, with patients relying on the centre for consistent access to low-cost, high-quality generics.
The district has strengthened its protocols to enhance the scheme’s impact, including:
- Optimised supply chain cycles to ensure uninterrupted availability of essential chronic-care medicines.
- Standardised quality assurance systems, ensuring all stocked generics meet national regulatory and safety norms.
- Improved patient navigation, supported by clearer categorisation of therapeutic groups and streamlined dispensing processes.
- Integrated hospital linkage, enabling seamless prescription-based access from healthcare providers to Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
By offering affordable medicines for diabetes, cardiac conditions, infections, and other high-burden diseases, the scheme is substantially reducing out-of-pocket expenditure for families in the region. It is also creating new livelihood opportunities, encouraging local youth to participate in setting up and running Jan Aushadhi outlets.

PMBJP’s structured supply mechanisms, quality-assured generics, and decentralised model can meaningfully expand access in underserved geographies. As the nationwide network of Kendras continues to grow, the initiative is setting a strong precedent for cost-efficient, patient-centric healthcare delivery across India.
