Medical Colleges

The Indian government has achieved remarkable progress in expanding medical education by significantly increasing the number of medical colleges and MBBS seats across the country. Since 2014, the number of medical colleges has surged by 88%, growing from 387 to 731. Concurrently, the number of MBBS seats has seen a 118% increase, rising from 51,348 to 1,12,112.

Postgraduate (PG) medical education has also experienced substantial growth. The number of PG seats has increased by 133%, from 31,185 before 2014 to 72,627 currently.

Over the last three academic sessions, the distribution of undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats between government and private medical colleges is as follows:

Session Government Medical Colleges Private Medical Colleges
UG Seats PG Seats UG Seats PG Seats
2021-22 48212 28260 43915 17858

2023-24 56300 33416 52640 21418

Several key initiatives have been instrumental in this expansion:

  1. Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS): This scheme has facilitated the establishment of 157 new medical colleges by upgrading district and referral hospitals, with 109 already operational. It has also supported the increase of 4,977 MBBS seats in 83 colleges and 8,058 PG seats across two phases in 137 colleges.
  2. Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY): Under this initiative, 75 projects for constructing super specialty blocks in government medical colleges have been approved, with 66 projects completed.
  3. AIIMS Expansion: The establishment of new AIIMS institutions has also been a priority, with 22 new AIIMS approved and undergraduate courses started in 19 of them.
  4. Faculty Enhancement: The government has recognized the DNB qualification for teaching faculty positions and increased the age limit for faculty appointments up to 70 years to address faculty shortages.

These efforts have not only increased the availability of medical education but have also improved the quality and accessibility of healthcare services across the nation. The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Smt. Anupriya Singh Patel, highlighted these achievements in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing medical education and healthcare infrastructure in India.
