Re-engineering Healthcare

As part of ramping up healthcare infrastructure in order to strengthen delivery of patient care across the State, the Odisha Government has initiated the process to recruit 3278 doctors in various government hospitals. It will be the biggest recruitment in a one go.

The Health secretary PK Meherda has requested the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) to conduct necessary recruitment test for appointment of medical officers (assistant surgeons).

The doctors will be recruited in the rank of Group A (junior branch) of the Odisha Medical and Health Services (OMHS) cadre during the year 2019-20.

A health department officer told Economic Times such high number of recruitment at one go was needed because the government in August created 2000 additional posts of doctors, raising the total sanctioned strength to 8719. These posts were created to cater to needs of those on long-term leave for higher studies and are called Leave Training Reserve Medical Officer (LTRMO).

As many as 1278 other posts are lying vacant, raising the total vacancies to 3278, as per the report.

The State Government is taking series of steps to boost delivery of healthcare services. These include raising beds across district headquarters hospitals and providing free treatment for accident victims in select private hospitals in first 48 hours after the mishap.
