India recorded a historic milestone with 20,138 organ transplants in 2025, the highest ever achieved in a single year, as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced a series of new initiatives to strengthen organ donation across the country.

Marking Indian Organ Donation Day, Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding access to life-saving organ transplants through improved awareness, stronger infrastructure, and streamlined organ allocation systems. The new initiatives are aimed at encouraging voluntary organ donation, enhancing coordination among transplant centres, and increasing public participation.

The government reiterated that organ donation remains one of the most effective ways to save multiple lives, while emphasizing the importance of timely registration, awareness campaigns, and collaboration between healthcare institutions and state authorities.

India’s record transplant numbers reflect the country’s growing capabilities in transplant medicine and underscore the success of ongoing efforts under the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).

The latest measures are expected to further strengthen the organ donation ecosystem and improve access to advanced transplant care for patients across the country.
