ManipalCigna Health Insurance has released region-specific findings from its India Health Quotient (IHQ) 2026, revealing that 72% of respondents in South India prioritise a healthy, balanced diet as one of their top five aspects of physical wellbeing. The figure rises to 75% in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, highlighting the growing focus on preventive healthcare and healthier lifestyles in the region.
The proprietary India Health Quotient measures self-assessed wellbeing across five dimensions—physical, mental, financial, occupational, and social health. While India’s overall health score stands at 65 out of 100, South India recorded a score of 63, with physical health emerging as the strongest dimension and financial health remaining the weakest.
The study also identified opportunities to strengthen mental wellbeing in the region. Only 49% of respondents reported having strong focus and clarity of mind, while 47% expressed confidence in their ability to adapt to unexpected changes, indicating the need for greater emphasis on mental resilience alongside physical health.
A key finding of the report is the positive impact of health insurance on overall wellbeing. Urban Indians with health insurance recorded an average health score of 68, compared to 62 among those without insurance. The six-point difference remained consistent across age groups, genders, regions, and stress levels, suggesting that financial protection contributes significantly to better physical, mental, and financial wellbeing.

Commenting on the findings, Sapna Desai, Chief Marketing Officer, ManipalCigna Health Insurance, said the study reflects how health today extends beyond physical fitness to include financial security, mental wellness, and social wellbeing. She added that while South India leads in healthy eating habits, health insurance continues to play a vital role in reducing wellbeing gaps and improving overall quality of life.
The India Health Quotient 2026 reinforces ManipalCigna’s commitment to promoting preventive healthcare and developing holistic health solutions that address the evolving wellbeing needs of urban Indians.
