BioNTech founders Ugur Sahin and Oezlem Tuereci have announced plans to step down from their roles at the German biotechnology company by the end of 2026 to establish a new venture focused on drug development.
Sahin currently serves as Chief Executive Officer, while Tuereci is the company’s Chief Medical Officer. The two scientists played a central role in BioNTech’s growth and led the development of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic.
The planned startup will focus on advancing mRNA-based technologies and early-stage therapeutic research. BioNTech said it may contribute certain intellectual property and technology rights to the new company on an arm’s-length basis. In return, the company could hold a minority stake in the venture and receive milestone-based payments linked to its development progress.
BioNTech has initiated the process of identifying successors for the leadership roles currently held by Sahin and Tuereci to ensure continuity in management.
The company stated that the founders’ departure will not impact its ongoing programmes, including its expanding oncology pipeline and mRNA-based therapeutic development efforts.
