Under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), 17,990 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) were operational across India as of December 31, 2025. The government has set a target to expand the network to 25,000 Kendras by March 2027 to strengthen the distribution of affordable generic medicines.
To ensure consistent pharmaceutical supply at Kendras, stocking of 200 commonly used medicines has been incentivised since September 2024. This includes 100 top-selling products under the scheme and 100 fast-moving medicines from the broader market. Kendra operators receive monthly incentives linked to maintaining inventory levels of these drugs.
An IT-enabled end-to-end pharmaceutical supply chain system connects five warehouses with a growing distributor network to support medicine availability nationwide. In addition, 400 fast-moving pharmaceutical products are monitored by the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), with digitised demand forecasting integrated into procurement planning.
Drug pricing under the scheme follows defined pharmaceutical benchmarks. Medicines listed under the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) are priced at least 50 percent lower than the ceiling price. Non-NLEM medicines are priced at a minimum of 50 percent below the average MRP of the top three branded equivalents in the market.
The Janaushadhi product basket comprises 2,110 medicines and 315 medical devices and consumables across key therapeutic segments including cardiovascular, oncology, anti-diabetic, anti-infective, anti-allergic and gastrointestinal therapies. Prices remain 50 percent to 80 percent lower than branded counterparts.
Pharmaceutical quality assurance protocols mandate procurement only from WHO-GMP certified manufacturing facilities. Every batch supplied to PMBI warehouses undergoes 100 percent pre-testing at NABL-accredited laboratories compliant with Good Laboratory Practices before distribution to Kendras.
Regular inspections by PMBI marketing officers are conducted to monitor compliance related to pricing, availability and pharmaceutical quality across the Jan Aushadhi network.
