Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd

In a major stride toward its global expansion strategy, Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd., India’s largest Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO), has broken ground for its first overseas manufacturing facility in Lusaka, Zambia.

The project, developed in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ), marks a significant milestone in Akums’ mission to deliver accessible, high-quality medicines to emerging markets. The upcoming facility, spread across 40 acres at the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone, will produce a wide range of pharmaceutical dosage forms, including tablets, capsules, liquids, injectables, topicals, and beta-lactam products.

Beyond strengthening local healthcare access, the project is expected to create over 1,000 new jobs, fostering industrial growth and skill development in Zambia’s pharmaceutical sector. The facility will adhere to international quality and safety standards, serving both domestic needs and export markets across SADC, COMESA, and the broader African continent.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sandeep Jain, Managing Director and Founder of Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, said the initiative reflects a “powerful alignment of vision” with the Zambian government.

“Through advanced manufacturing practices, global quality systems, and a patient-centric approach, we aim to strengthen Zambia’s healthcare foundation while fostering regional self-reliance and innovation,” he stated.

The groundbreaking ceremony was officially launched by President Hakainde Hichilema, who hailed the project as a historic step toward Zambia’s medical self-sufficiency and economic empowerment. Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, emphasised the project’s potential to reduce dependency on imported medicines, lower treatment costs, and boost national health security.

With Zambia’s fast-growing pharmaceutical market driven by government-led affordability initiatives and expanding healthcare access, Akums’ investment is poised to transform the regional supply landscape. Once operational, the facility will not only enhance drug availability and affordability but also establish Zambia as a key pharmaceutical manufacturing hub in Southern Africa.

This initiative reinforces Akums’ commitment to creating sustainable healthcare ecosystems and expanding India’s pharmaceutical leadership to new frontiers.
