Rajasthan’s bold step towards elderly care sets a new benchmark in geriatric services with over 19.7 lakh senior citizens registered

The Government of Rajasthan has operationalised Ramashray Wards and Geriatric Clinics in every district hospital of the state. Spearheaded by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Bhajanlal Sharma and supported by Medical Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Khinvsar, this initiative reflects the government’s clear vision of ensuring dignified and accessible healthcare for the elderly.

Launched on March 14, 2024, Ramashray Wards are now actively serving the needs of Rajasthan’s ageing population, with nearly 20 lakh senior citizens already enrolled under this state-led welfare model. The integrated service model is not just a clinical intervention—it is a commitment to public service and compassionate governance.

Key Outcomes & Service Utilisation
- Over 18 lakh senior citizens have accessed Outpatient Department (OPD) services.
- 1.05 lakh elderly patients have received Inpatient Department (IPD) care.
- More than 12.2 lakh diagnostic tests and 27,000 physiotherapy sessions have been provided.
These numbers underscore the initiative’s operational scale and the increasing demand for targeted healthcare among India’s elderly demographic.

Infrastructure Designed for Senior-Friendly Care
Each Ramashray Ward features:

- 10 dedicated beds (5 each for men and women), with curtains ensuring privacy.
- Nursing alarm systems for real-time assistance.
- Gender-specific accessible toilets fitted with grab bars.
- A physiotherapy unit equipped with advanced modalities like:
- Short Wave Diathermy
- Ultrasound Therapy
- Cervical and Pelvic Traction
- TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)
To further support mobility and independence, each ward includes wheelchairs, trolleys, and custom medical furniture, contributing to a patient-centric healing environment.
Integrated Clinical Support
Each ward is staffed with a designated nodal officer, dedicated nursing teams, and sanitation personnel. Services such as specialist consultation, lab sample collection, and bedside report delivery are standard. For transparency and ease of communication, the contact details of all healthcare professionals are prominently displayed.
Geriatric Clinics Expand OPD Reach
Complementing the inpatient wards, Geriatric Clinics have been established at both district and sub-district hospitals, offering dedicated OPD consultations. With priority access at registration desks, diagnostic labs, and pharmacy counters, the system ensures that senior citizens are not burdened with long queues or delays.
Setting a National Precedent
This model places Rajasthan among the front-runners in state-led geriatric care, providing a scalable framework for other Indian states to emulate. By addressing both preventive and curative aspects of elderly health in a single continuum of care, the Ramashray model signals a critical shift towards inclusive, infrastructure-backed senior care policies.
As India’s population continues to age, such models will be key to ensuring health equity, reducing hospital burden, and improving long-term patient outcomes in public healthcare systems.
