In a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility, P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, in collaboration with the Hinduja Foundation, has expanded its Type 1 Diabetes Initiative (T1DI) by providing insulin pumps to 20 children from underprivileged backgrounds. As part of the Insulin Pump Therapy Initiation Program, these insulin pumps will be fully supported for a period of five years, ensuring continued access to vital diabetes management tools. This initiative further extends the hospital’s commitment to providing free medical care to nearly 400 children with Type 1 Diabetes.

Since its launch in 2019, the Type 1 Diabetes Initiative has provided essential, cost-free treatment and care to children with Type 1 Diabetes, focusing on a sustainable and comprehensive model of healthcare. Over the years, the program has supported over 400 children, investing more than INR 11 crore in the cause. Not only has it achieved improved blood sugar control with a reduction in average HbA1c levels from 10.2% to 7-8%, but it has also led to a 75% reduction in hospitalisations and bolstered treatment adherence through counselling and life skills education.

Speaking at the event, Gautam Khanna, CEO of P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC, emphasised, “Today’s milestone reinforces our mission to support underprivileged children and their families. Our collaboration with Hinduja Foundation has paved the way for a more inclusive healthcare approach, bringing quality care and scientific research to the forefront of Type 1 Diabetes management. This initiative is an important step towards achieving a future where diabetes care in India and globally is equitable and accessible.”

Dr. Phulrenu Chauhan, Head of the Department of Endocrinology at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC, highlighted, “The donation of insulin pumps is a crucial part of our broader initiative to provide comprehensive care for children with Type 1 Diabetes. These pumps are pivotal in ensuring better blood sugar control, reducing complications, and improving the overall quality of life. With continuous support, education, and medical care, the initiative has already changed the lives of many children and their families.”

Type 1 Diabetes, a lifelong condition, requires intensive management, including multiple insulin injections and daily blood glucose checks. Unfortunately, the high costs of insulin, syringes, blood glucose strips, and medical consultations often place a financial burden on families, especially those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Many children in such situations face severe complications or even early mortality due to lack of access to proper care. Through this initiative, P. D. Hinduja Hospital and the Hinduja Foundation are committed to covering all medical expenses for these children, ensuring they have access to the necessary care and support for managing the condition.

Dr. Ashish Mendhi, Program Director at Hinduja Foundation, remarked, “Our collaboration with P. D. Hinduja Hospital underscores our commitment to improving access to care for vulnerable populations. Today’s event reflects our vision of advancing scientific research, expanding the program’s reach, and continuing to provide targeted care for children living with Type 1 Diabetes.”

The Type 1 Diabetes Initiative has already demonstrated impressive clinical outcomes and is setting a new benchmark for sustainable, evidence-based chronic disease care in India. As the program continues to grow, it remains a model of compassion, scientific innovation, and a testament to what can be achieved when healthcare professionals and organisations unite for the common good.

This initiative not only improves the lives of children with Type 1 Diabetes but also fosters dialogue on the importance of equitable healthcare solutions for chronic diseases, ensuring a brighter, healthier future for all.
