Narayana Hrudayalaya

In a significant move set to transform healthcare delivery in Eastern India, Narayana Hrudayalaya Ltd. has announced an investment of ₹1,500 crore for the construction of a world-class hospital in New Town, Kolkata. The foundation stone for the project was laid by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the presence of Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, Founder and Chairman of Narayana Health.

The new medical facility, sprawling across 10 lakh square feet, will commence operations with an initial capacity of 350 beds by the financial year 2028-29. It is designed to expand to a 1,100-bed super-specialty hospital in multiple phases over the next decade. Once fully operational, the hospital will increase Narayana Health’s total bed capacity in Kolkata to 2,500, reinforcing the region’s position as a hub for advanced healthcare.

Advanced Specialties and Employment Opportunities

The hospital will house multiple specialty centres, including oncology, cardiac sciences, organ transplants, orthopaedics, advanced trauma, and critical care. According to Narayana Health, this facility will be equipped with the latest medical technologies, ensuring access to world-class healthcare for patients across Eastern India.

Highlighting the socio-economic impact, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee emphasized that the project would generate over 10,000 job opportunities, including both direct employment and tertiary sector roles. “This investment is a testament to West Bengal’s commitment to fostering healthcare innovation and improving patient access,” she stated.

Strategic Investment to Meet Rising Healthcare Demands

The project’s financing will be a combination of debt and internal accruals. Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty underscored the importance of this expansion, noting that the existing Narayana Health facilities in Kolkata are already operating at high capacity. “With rising medical emergencies and complex healthcare needs, having a well-equipped critical care unit is no longer optional—it’s essential,” he said.

  1. Venkatesh, Group COO of Narayana Health, added, “This expansion will significantly enhance Kolkata’s ability to manage advanced medical cases, ensuring patients receive timely and high-quality care.”

A Catalyst for Healthcare Growth in India

For the Indian healthcare industry, this investment represents more than just infrastructure expansion—it signifies a strategic move towards strengthening India’s healthcare ecosystem. The hospital’s cutting-edge facilities will drive advancements in clinical outcomes, facilitate industry partnerships, and create opportunities for medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and healthcare service providers.

Furthermore, the project aligns with India’s broader vision of enhancing healthcare accessibility and affordability. Dr. Shetty reiterated Narayana Health’s commitment to serving all socioeconomic groups, stating, “Our dream is to bridge the gap between the richest and the poorest when it comes to healthcare access.”

As the Indian healthcare industry continues its rapid evolution, initiatives like this not only address current gaps but also set new benchmarks for quality, innovation, and inclusivity.
