The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated a large-scale universal cancer screening survey to detect and treat cancer cases in the early stages. With cancers like breast, oral, and cervical being preventable and treatable if diagnosed early, the state is ramping up efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality. Under the Dr NTR Vaidya Seva scheme, over ₹624 crore is allocated annually for cancer treatment.

As part of this initiative, medical teams, including doctors and lab technicians, are conducting screenings across the state. Out of the 4.07 crore population above 18 years, 94.99 lakh people have been screened so far, revealing 87,542 suspected cancer cases. The survey identified 37,060 suspected oral cancer cases, 24,381 suspected breast cancer cases, and 26,081 suspected cervical cancer cases. These cases will undergo further confirmation at specialized hospitals.

To enhance cancer care, the government is upgrading district hospitals and setting up Comprehensive Cancer Care Centres (CCCs) in phases. Facilities in Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool, and Kadapa are being expanded, with additional doctors, nurses, and paramedics deployed. Basic cancer care services will be available within a 50 km radius, while advanced treatment will be provided at select locations.

To further ease access to treatment, district hospitals now have Day-Care Centres for chemotherapy, reducing financial burdens on patients. The health department has urged residents to participate in screenings, emphasising the importance of early detection in saving lives.
