Key advancements include a 30% increase in inpatient beds, a 40% expansion in ICU and operation theatres, leadership in AI-driven diagnostics and robotic surgery training, and pioneering digital health initiatives like e-prescriptions and ABHA ID integration under ABDM. With over ₹200 crore in research funding and a new Bio-Incubator for medical innovation, AIIMS continues to set benchmarks in digital healthcare transformation, strengthening India’s healthcare ecosystem.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, marked its 69th Foundation Day with a grand celebration presided over by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav. The institution, widely regarded as the pinnacle of medical education, research, and healthcare in India, continues to set benchmarks not only within the country but also on the global stage.

AIIMS: A Legacy of Excellence

Shri Jadhav, addressing the event, lauded AIIMS New Delhi for its consistent ranking as the number one medical institution in India for seven consecutive years under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). He emphasized AIIMS’ unwavering commitment to pioneering healthcare advancements and medical education.

AIIMS has cemented its position as a National Resource Centre under the National Medical College Network (NMCN) of the Union Health Ministry. This initiative has facilitated academic collaborations with over 100 medical colleges, significantly enhancing undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education through the National Learning Management & Information System, SAKSHYAM.

Advancements in AI-Driven Healthcare

In a significant leap forward, AIIMS has established a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. This center, created under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), is set to develop AI-based solutions for diagnosing chest X-rays, detecting diabetic retinopathy at an early stage, and identifying skin lesions. Additionally, AIIMS is evolving into the largest robotic surgery skill training center, equipped with two state-of-the-art robotic surgery systems dedicated to training surgeons.

Growth in Research and Infrastructure

The institution is currently managing over 900 extramural research projects funded by national and international agencies, with a cumulative grant of nearly Rs. 200 crores. Additionally, AIIMS has invested in over 240 intramural research projects while facilitating travel fellowships for students, residents, and PhD scholars. A notable addition to its research and entrepreneurial initiatives is the Centre for Medical Innovation & Entrepreneurship, established as a Bio-Incubator under the BIRAC – BioNEST Scheme.

On the infrastructure front, AIIMS has significantly expanded its inpatient capacity, with a 30% increase in hospital beds and a nearly 40% boost in intensive care and operation theatre services over the last two years. Furthermore, a new hostel complex comprising 2,200 rooms is under construction at an estimated cost of Rs. 900 crores. New academic facilities, including the Mother and Child Block, Surgery Block, and the National Centre of Ageing, are now fully operational.

AIIMS at the Forefront of India’s Digital Health Transformation

AIIMS New Delhi is playing a pivotal role in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which aims to create a seamless digital health ecosystem across India. The institution is spearheading the integration of electronic health records through unique Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs, ensuring digital accessibility and continuity of care across healthcare facilities.

One of the key developments is the phased adoption of e-prescriptions, beginning with the Endocrinology and Mother & Child Health Block. This transition will eventually phase out manual prescriptions, enhancing efficiency and reducing medical errors.

The institution is also implementing real-time dashboards for patient management, QR code-based queue systems, and integrating laboratory services into the national digital health network. The government has mandated 100% registration of AIIMS’ medical professionals under the Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR) to standardize and streamline medical records.

National Implications and Future Prospects

AIIMS Delhi’s digital transformation serves as a model for other healthcare institutions nationwide. By implementing ABDM initiatives, AIIMS is driving systemic change in healthcare delivery, ensuring interoperability between medical records and enabling wider access to quality healthcare, even in rural and underserved regions.

Dr. Harsh Mahajan, Chair of the FICCI Health Services Committee, emphasized the broader impact of ABDM, stating, “If India is to achieve its target of universal health coverage, ABDM is the vehicle on which this will be achieved.”

The central government is keen on leveraging AIIMS’ expertise to train other hospitals in digital health adoption. This move is expected to standardize healthcare data management, improve patient safety, and make healthcare services more efficient and transparent.

AIIMS New Delhi’s 69th Foundation Day not only celebrated its legacy but also underscored its pivotal role in shaping the future of Indian healthcare. Through its advancements in AI, robotics, medical education, and digital health, AIIMS is driving the nation towards a more technologically advanced and accessible healthcare system. As the institution continues to innovate and expand, its impact on India’s healthcare landscape is set to be profound and far-reaching.
