The rising prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases is driving significant investment in Ahmedabad’s healthcare sector, with an estimated Rs 3,000 crore expected to flow into private hospital infrastructure over the next five years. This surge is projected to add around 3,000 private hospital beds, effectively doubling the city’s current capacity.
Leading the charge is the Adani Group, which plans to establish a 1,000-bed multi-specialty hospital in Ahmedabad as part of its broader expansion strategy, which includes another facility in Mumbai. Complementing this effort, Zydus Hospital has announced a 300-bed multi-specialty centre in the city’s Ghodasar area, backed by an investment of approximately Rs 300 crore.

“The increasing incidence of lifestyle diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and neurological disorders, underscores the need for advanced healthcare facilities,” said Dr. V N Shah, Founder of Zydus Hospital. “Our new facility will address these demands while elevating the quality of care available in the region.”

According to Dr. Viren Shah, Vice President of the Ahmedabad Hospitals & Nursing Homes Association (AHNA), Ahmedabad currently hosts between 1,100 and 1,200 registered private hospitals. Of these, approximately 70% operate with fewer than 15 beds, 20% accommodate 16 to 50 beds, 5% maintain capacities of 51 to 100 beds, while only 13 hospitals exceed 100 beds.

In the past year alone, 50 new private hospitals with capacities exceeding 25 beds were established, reflecting the sector’s accelerated growth.

Several existing healthcare providers are scaling up their operations to meet rising demand. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, a prominent trust-run institution, recently expanded its capacity from 127 to 225 beds. “We’ve integrated cutting-edge technology, AI-driven equipment, and full-time specialists across key departments, including oncology, cardiology, gynaecology, neurology, and paediatrics,” said Dr. Manesh Agarwal, CEO of Jivraj Mehta Hospital. “Further expansion is already planned to support the growing patient load.”
Similarly, HCG Hospitals has introduced a new large-format hospital on SG Highway, complementing its existing facility in the Mithakhali area. “With lifestyle diseases such as cancer on the rise, these expansions are crucial to providing comprehensive, specialized care,” noted Dr. Bharat Gadhavi, Regional Director for HCG Hospitals (Gujarat & Rajasthan).
As Ahmedabad emerges as a healthcare hub, industry experts predict that the planned investments will not only enhance patient care but also create opportunities for medical equipment suppliers, healthcare technology providers, and associated service industries.
The rapid expansion reflects broader trends seen across India, where private sector initiatives are playing a critical role in bridging healthcare gaps and addressing the evolving burden of non-communicable diseases.
