Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, an esteemed Professor and Diabetologist, inaugurated the 52nd International Annual Conference of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) on 15th November in New Delhi. Addressing an audience of global healthcare professionals and diabetes experts, Dr. Singh emphasized the critical need for proactive diabetes prevention, particularly during the prediabetic stage, to avert complications that can damage vital organs such as the heart and kidneys.

Highlighting the increasing prevalence of diabetes in India, Dr. Singh underscored the importance of early intervention strategies, especially for younger populations and pregnant women. He advocated for strict preventive measures, including the adoption of “primordial control” during pregnancy, a strategy focused on managing glucose levels early to reduce hereditary risks and foster healthier conditions for the developing child.

“Diabetes-related complications often begin silently, before symptoms become evident, causing irreversible damage to vital organs,” Dr. Singh stated. He stressed the importance of raising awareness and implementing preventive efforts to address Type 2 diabetes among healthcare providers and the public.

The conference also marked the release of the RSSDI report, which sheds light on India’s growing diabetes challenge. With over 101 million diagnosed cases and an additional 136 million individuals in the prediabetic stage, the report calls for urgent intervention. It highlights the narrowing gap between rural and urban diabetes prevalence due to lifestyle changes and limited access to healthcare. The national diabetes prevalence rate now stands at 11.4%, underlining the urgency of targeted, community-based prevention strategies.

To combat this alarming trend, RSSDI proposed a comprehensive roadmap that includes:

  • Expanding telemedicine and rural healthcare facilities.
  • Advocating for diabetes care under national insurance schemes.
  • Developing culturally relevant dietary and lifestyle guidelines to address India’s diverse population needs.
  • Strengthening monitoring and intervention mechanisms for more impactful diabetes management.

The conference, held at New Delhi’s Yashobhoomi convention center, brought together over 20,000 participants and featured plenary sessions, workshops, and interactive discussions. International Diabetes Federation President Prof. Peter Schwarz delivered a keynote address, further enhancing the event’s global significance. Additionally, celebrated sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik created a unique installation, adding a creative dimension to the conference.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, who serves as the Life Patron of RSSDI, reaffirmed his dedication to public health, stating that proactive diabetes prevention is key to safeguarding the nation’s health. The event highlighted India’s urgent need for a cohesive and inclusive approach to diabetes prevention and management, aiming to inspire collaborative efforts at both national and international levels.
