IMS-BHU

The Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU) has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Ministry of Education (MoE). This strategic collaboration aims to elevate IMS-BHU into a world-class medical institution, significantly enhancing healthcare and research in the region.

The MoU was formalized in New Delhi, witnessed by Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda, BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Kumar Jain, and IMS-BHU Director Prof. SN Sankhwar. Under the agreement, IMS-BHU will receive grants-in-aid from the MoHFW modeled after the new AIIMS institutions established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

This funding will expand the availability of affordable, state-of-the-art secondary and tertiary healthcare services, significantly benefiting the population of eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to reduce patient referrals and out-of-pocket expenditures while improving patient satisfaction and clinical care services.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while emphasizing the institution’s role in regional healthcare, called for a focus on advancing research output and fostering collaborations with leading national and international academic institutions. He also reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of empowering institutions like BHU to serve as global centers of excellence.

Echoing this sentiment, Union Minister JP Nadda highlighted the government’s “whole of the government” approach in fostering interdepartmental collaboration to achieve shared goals. He stated that the MoU would establish a close partnership between AIIMS, New Delhi, and IMS-BHU, enhancing teaching standards, fostering research excellence, and facilitating regular student and faculty exchanges.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Gopal Nath, Dean of Research at IMS-BHU, expressed enthusiasm about the new opportunities, saying, “This MoU will further strengthen our research infrastructure and enable us to better serve the community. Being situated within the BHU campus, we have a unique responsibility to advance medical research and healthcare services.”

This development builds upon the foundation laid by the 2018 MoU between AIIMS Delhi and IMS-BHU, which aimed to facilitate exposure to the latest advancements in healthcare, education, and research.

With this historic agreement, IMS-BHU is set to emerge as a leader in medical research and healthcare delivery, contributing significantly to India’s vision of holistic and inclusive development in education and healthcare.
