In a significant move toward enhancing maternal healthcare in India, the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) has incorporated the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India’s (FOGSI) Manyata quality standards into its certification programs. This development is part of a collaboration between NABH and FOGSI, initiated in 2022, and aligns with the Indian government’s “One Nation One Standard” mission to elevate maternity care quality through uniform standards across the country. By integrating Manyata guidelines, the partnership aims to ensure consistent, evidence-based maternal healthcare and support the national goal of Universal Health Coverage.
Manyata, FOGSI’s flagship quality improvement initiative, is designed to promote safe, respectful, and high-quality care for mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. Based on World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, Manyata standards cover antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care, forming a critical framework for safe maternal healthcare.

A pilot project assessed 200 private maternity facilities trained in Manyata standards, involving a team of NABH assessors specifically trained by FOGSI. Results revealed consistent success in certifications across both NABH and FOGSI assessors, indicating the effectiveness of these standards and their seamless integration. Through this partnership, facilities applying for NABH’s Entry-Level certification can now pursue dual certifications for NABH and Manyata, enhancing their credibility in maternity care. Applications will be processed via the NABH HOPE portal, a digital platform streamlining certification procedures and assessments. Additionally, FOGSI is collaborating with NABH to build a dedicated pool of NABH assessors with specialized training in obstetrics and gynecology.

“This collaboration is a breakthrough in standardizing maternal healthcare. By adopting Manyata’s protocols, we are not only strengthening our accreditation framework but also setting new benchmarks in maternal health,” stated Mr. Rizwan Koita, Chairman of NABH. “Such uniform standards are crucial to ensure every mother receives high-quality, consistent care across the country.”
Reflecting on the pressing need for improved maternal care, Dr. Madhuri Patel, Secretary General of FOGSI, highlighted, “With over a million maternal deaths over the past two decades, there is an urgent need to accelerate progress. To meet the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, we must work collaboratively to create sustainable, accessible healthcare solutions.”
Dr. Hrishikesh D. Pai, Immediate Past President of FOGSI, emphasized the impact of the collaboration on private healthcare, stating, “This joint effort represents a major step towards fostering excellence, accountability, and patient-centered care. We are committed to broadening this initiative’s impact to ensure safe and dignified childbirth experiences.”
Former FOGSI President Dr. Rishma Pai added, “By embedding Manyata standards in NABH’s certification framework, we are creating a comprehensive system that ensures the safety of mothers and children across India. This unified approach to maternal care is both a goal and a necessity for the healthcare sector.”
Dr. Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO of NABH, reiterated the collaborative benefits, “Incorporating Manyata standards into our accreditation model aligns with FOGSI’s expertise to ensure accredited facilities meet comprehensive maternal health protocols, thereby advancing quality maternal care across India.”
National Convener for the FOGSI-Manyata initiative, Dr. Hema Divakar, further elaborated, “This partnership underscores NABH and FOGSI’s shared mission to provide every mother with the compassionate, quality care she deserves. Through a joint Technical Working Group, we are focused on optimizing standards that blend infrastructure with essential clinical protocols.”
This landmark collaboration represents a substantial step toward reducing preventable maternal mortality and elevating maternal care quality across India, supporting both national and global health goals for the future.
