Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda inaugurated the state-of-the-art Renal Transplant ICU and Facility at AIIMS Bilaspur, a significant milestone in the institute’s development. This marks the beginning of renal transplant services at the premier healthcare institution, bridging a long-standing gap in transplant services in Himachal Pradesh. Shri Nadda interacted with the first renal transplant recipient, who is recovering well, and the donor, ensuring their well-being.

Addressing the occasion, Shri Nadda expressed his satisfaction with the rapid operationalization of the renal transplant services at AIIMS Bilaspur, stating, “The commencement of renal transplant services will significantly benefit the people of Himachal Pradesh, especially those who lack access to expensive treatments.” An initial grant of ₹2 crore has been sanctioned to support these services, which will be accessible under the PMJAY and HimCare health insurance schemes. The facility is expected to assist 50-100 patients annually and pave the way for future multi-organ and bone marrow transplantation services.


Expansion of Healthcare Services at AIIMS Bilaspur

During his visit, Shri Nadda also conducted a comprehensive review of the institute’s operations and progress. AIIMS Bilaspur has made remarkable strides since its foundation in 2017, with services such as telemedicine benefiting over 20,000 patients across the state. The institute now offers a range of specialized services, including a Cardiac Cath Lab, Radiotherapy, and comprehensive cancer care, enhancing its capacity to serve the local population.


With 614 students enrolled in various medical courses, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty programs, Shri Nadda praised AIIMS Bilaspur’s commitment to medical education and research. Ph.D. programs are expected to commence in 2025, further strengthening the institute’s research capabilities.

Key Infrastructure Announcements

Shri Nadda also announced the commencement of a 250-bedded Vishram Sadan, a night shelter for patients and their families, at a cost of ₹25.6 crore, sponsored by PowerGrid. Additionally, the Union Government has approved infrastructure projects worth ₹178 crore, which include 72 dwelling units, hostels for undergraduate students, and lecture halls for the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. A solar rooftop power plant with a capacity of 538KWH has also been approved to enhance the institute’s sustainability efforts.

Moreover, the installation of a PET-CT machine, valued at ₹22 crore, is currently underway, which will significantly improve cancer and inflammatory disease treatment in the region. The Government of India has also approved the establishment of a Regional Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) at AIIMS Bilaspur, with an allocation of ₹18 crore, aimed at strengthening diagnostic services in the region.

Future Initiatives and Technological Integration

The Health Minister highlighted plans to integrate AIIMS Bilaspur’s drone and ambulance services with district health resources, reducing response times for transporting patients and medical samples from remote locations. Shri Nadda commended the institute’s initiative in adopting drone technology for healthcare and assured government support for its swift implementation.

The visit concluded with Shri Nadda reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, ensuring access to top-quality medical services for residents of the state and neighboring regions.

Since its inception, AIIMS Bilaspur has treated over 5,00,000 outpatients and 35,000 inpatients, with facilities such as ICUs, advanced diagnostics, and specialized surgeries contributing to its growing role as a leading healthcare provider. With its expanding capabilities, including the soon-to-be operational PET-CT facility and comprehensive cancer care services, the institute is well on its way to becoming a beacon of medical excellence in northern India.
