Zika Virus

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has confirmed three fresh cases of the Zika virus in the city after a brief lull in reported infections during September. The new cases were detected in private healthcare facilities, with confirmation coming from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, on October 8.

The recent cases involve a 19-year-old woman from Paud Phata, a 69-year-old man from Warje Naka, and a 59-year-old man from Karve Nagar. According to Dr. Nina Borade, PMC Health Officer, all three patients presented with mild symptoms, primarily fever, in September. Initial tests at private laboratories indicated Zika virus infection, and NIV later verified these findings.

Pune had reported its first Zika case of the year in June, with the cumulative count now reaching 103 cases. The month-wise breakdown shows 5 cases in June, 54 in July, 39 in August, 2 in September, and the recent 3 in October.

Despite these new cases, Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer of PMC, assured the public that the situation is under control, largely due to the city’s entomological surveys and containment efforts. “The measures taken have been effective in breaking the transmission chain of the Zika virus. Sporadic cases may still arise, but a large-scale outbreak is unlikely,” Dr. Dighe stated.

To curb further spread, the PMC has launched awareness campaigns and intensified fogging operations in affected areas. The health department also emphasized the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites, with ongoing monitoring of both private and public healthcare facilities to ensure swift containment responses.

Residents have been urged to stay vigilant, use mosquito repellents, and maintain cleanliness around their homes to prevent mosquito breeding. The PMC remains proactive in its efforts to keep the city’s population safe from further transmission of the virus.
