In response to a recent surge in global mpox cases, Chinese customs authorities have announced the implementation of stricter surveillance measures at all ports of entry. This proactive step is aimed at preventing the importation of the mpox virus into China, ensuring the safety and health of its citizens.
According to the General Administration of Customs (GAC), individuals entering China from countries or regions with confirmed mpox cases are now required to declare any exposure to the virus or symptoms such as fever, headache, back pain, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and rashes upon arrival. These individuals will be subject to medical measures, including sampling and testing, as per the established protocols.

Additionally, the GAC has mandated the disinfection of vehicles, containers, and goods that may be contaminated or potentially contaminated, coming from regions affected by mpox. These precautionary measures took effect immediately on August 15, 2024, and will remain in place for six months.

This move by Chinese authorities comes on the heels of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring mpox a public health emergency of international concern. The WHO’s declaration underscores the virus’s potential for further international spread and highlights the need for heightened vigilance.
Recent data from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has reported over 2,000 new mpox cases in Africa within the past week alone. Since January 2022, the continent has seen approximately 38,465 cases and 1,456 deaths, impacting at least 16 countries across all five regions of Africa.

Mpox, a viral infection that can affect both humans and animals, is characterized by symptoms such as a rash that progresses to blisters and crusts, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. While the illness is generally mild, most infected individuals recover within a few weeks without the need for treatment.
China’s swift action in tightening port surveillance reflects its commitment to preventing the spread of mpox and safeguarding public health.
