CBM India, a prominent organization focused on disability-inclusive development, has taken a significant step towards improving community eye health services in Nandhagudi, located in the Bengaluru Rural District. The initiative saw the distribution of vital equipment to bolster eye health services in the community.
Forty community health workers, including ASHA workers, auxiliary nurse midwives, and community health officers, received specialized kits. These kits, comprising a backpack, vision charts, a measuring tape, a water bottle, a notepad, and a pen, enable health workers to perform essential eye screenings directly within the community. To maximize the effectiveness of these kits, CBM India also conducted a comprehensive training session, empowering these healthcare workers to carry out doorstep eye screenings. This training ensures that potential vision issues are identified early, and those requiring further medical attention are referred to appropriate specialists.

Moreover, CBM India addressed the needs of persons with disabilities by distributing assistive devices during the event. The distribution included seven wheelchairs, three assistive canes, and one commode chair, significantly enhancing the quality of life for the recipients.
Mr. Sony Thomas, Executive Director of CBM India Trust, emphasized the importance of early detection and intervention in preventing vision loss. “At CBM India, our mission is to ensure that everyone in our community has timely access to quality eye care. By equipping community health workers with the necessary tools and training and providing assistive devices to persons with disabilities, we are making substantial progress towards improving eye health and overall well-being in Nandhagudi and nearby villages,” he stated.

This initiative, part of CBM India’s Corporate Social Responsibility program, acknowledges the difficulties rural communities face in accessing affordable and quality eye care services. Over the past year, the program has reached over 10,000 individuals through eye screenings, facilitated approximately 300 cataract surgeries, and distributed more than 700 spectacles.

Aligned with the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB-VI), CBM India’s efforts underscore their commitment to fostering an inclusive and accessible healthcare ecosystem, ensuring no one is left behind.
