ABHA

The Government of India’s ABHA-based Scan and Share, initiative led by the National Health Authority (NHA) in collaboration with state governments, has proven highly effective, streamlining patient registration and enhancing access to digital health records. Since its inception in October 2022, this innovative program has facilitated over 3.87 crore patient registrations across more than 5,800 public healthcare institutions, significantly easing the burden on outpatient departments (OPDs), with over 2,400 hospitals, benefiting more than 1.80 lakh patients daily.

By leveraging the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) compliant Hospital Management Information System (HMIS), healthcare facilities can generate QR codes that patients scan for seamless OPD registration. This process not only speeds up registration but also enables the linkage of health records to the patient’s ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), ensuring easy access to diagnostic reports and other health information.

To support this initiative, extensive training programs, informational campaigns, and promotional materials have been provided to healthcare facilities. The Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS) further encourages adoption by offering financial incentives to facilities and digital solution companies for each successful Scan and Share registration.

An upcoming feature, “Scan and Pay,” is currently being piloted, allowing patients to pay for diagnostic and lab services directly through a mobile application, thus eliminating the need for physical transactions at healthcare facilities.

The government’s efforts to integrate diagnostic software solutions and Lab Management Information Systems (LMIS) with ABDM have also borne fruit, with over 219 partners currently onboard, including 15 ABDM-integrated LMIS providers. This integration enables digital delivery of lab reports, allowing patients to access their test results remotely via Personal Health Record (PHR) applications, thereby reducing the need for follow-up visits to healthcare facilities.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging digital technologies to improve the accessibility, affordability, and efficiency of healthcare services in India. The Minister of State in the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted these achievements in a recent written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

The ABHA-based Scan and Share initiative represents a significant step forward in the digital transformation of India’s healthcare system, offering a more streamlined and patient-friendly experience. As the program continues to expand, it promises to enhance the quality of healthcare services and improve patient outcomes nationwide.
