Towards the efforts to enhance food safety measures and promote healthier practices, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign across prominent markets in Delhi. Collaborating with the Food Safety Department of Delhi, this initiative aims to educate and sensitize food business operators (FBOs) and traders on crucial aspects of food safety.
Commencing from the renowned Khan Market and INA Market on April 8, 2024, the campaign prioritizes the identification and mitigation of pesticide residue and contaminants in food items, particularly fruits and vegetables. Market associations and traders were actively engaged, emphasizing the adverse effects of pesticide residue and the necessity of rigorous testing.

A significant highlight of the campaign was the introduction of FSSAI’s innovative initiative, the “Food Safety on Wheel” mobile lab. This mobile lab is equipped with rapid testing kits capable of detecting approximately 50 pesticide residues across various food categories, including fruits, vegetables, milk, and cereals. The quick turnaround time for test results facilitates prompt action to uphold food safety standards.

Traders were encouraged to leverage this resource for expedited testing, ensuring the safety and quality of products sold in the market. Additionally, they were briefed on a range of food safety topics, including the importance of obtaining FSSAI licenses or registration and the strict adherence to food safety standards. Emphasis was placed on sourcing raw materials exclusively from FSSAI licensed/registered vendors to guarantee traceability and compliance.
Furthermore, the significance of raw material testing to ensure the safety and quality of food products was underscored during the program. Attendees were also educated about the dangers of artificial ripening and wax coating of fruits and vegetables using unapproved chemicals, while the role of organic farming in promoting safer food practices was emphasized.
The event emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in ensuring food safety, encapsulated in the mantra, “Food Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility.” FSSAI reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health through the robust implementation of food safety protocols nationwide.
With these proactive measures, FSSAI aims to foster a culture of food safety consciousness among all stakeholders across the food supply chain, contributing to a healthier and safer India.
