India’s Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has successfully introduced a digital, scan-based OPD registration service, with Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka being the top-performing states in its implementation. Over 1 crore OPD registration tokens have been generated using the ABHA-based Scan and Share service since its inception in October 2022.
The service, currently in operation in more than 2,600 healthcare facilities across 419 districts and 33 States and Union Territories, allows patients to swiftly register at OPDs by scanning a QR code and sharing their ABHA profile. This initiative by the National Health Authority (NHA) has been instrumental in reducing hospital queue times, benefiting nearly 1 lakh patients daily.

The CEO of NHA emphasised the transformative nature of this digital service, saying, “ABDM is engineered to streamline healthcare delivery. The Scan and Share service is a pivotal tech solution that aims to expedite service access for patients. Our vision is to broaden its scope to include pharmacies and labs, ensuring hassle-free healthcare access for all, particularly vulnerable groups. This will also provide patients with digitised prescriptions, pharmacy receipts, and diagnostic reports.”

Highlighting the initiative’s success, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi disclosed their effective use of the ABHA-based Scan and Share service. AIIMS New Delhi is leading the way, having issued 73,700 OPD tokens via this method. This stands testament to the institution’s commitment to optimising patient-centric healthcare services. Furthermore, the ABHA Mobile app has been pivotal in refining the patient registration experience, considerably slashing wait times at AIIMS’s OPD.
