e-prescription systems

From July 1, the state health department in Kolkata has introduced e-prescription systems in government hospitals, medical colleges, and 174 primary health centers.

This move aims to improve transparency, maintain digital disease records, and enhance medical data management. By implementing e-prescriptions, patient histories and disease profiles can be efficiently generated and stored. The initiative also promotes generic drug usage and facilitates the sharing of patient data.

All government health facilities have been instructed to install the necessary IT systems, covering approximately 50% of hospital wards. Doctors will now type prescriptions instead of writing them by hand, similar to some private hospitals in the area.

While challenges may arise initially due to the absence of data entry operators, the e-prescription system is expected to streamline processes and improve healthcare efficiency in the region.
