The Health Minister of Maharashtra, Rajesh Tope, has warned the state of stern measures in the wake of increasing cases of Omicron variant of Covid 19 in the state. Tope addressed a press conference at his official residence on Wednesday.

Talking about the increase in cases, Tope said, “51000 tests are being conducted daily,out of which nearly 2200 samples are found to be positive, and this indicates an increasing rate of 4 percent, which is not a good sign for Mumbai.”


He further said that while in January 2020,the average number of cases in a day was 300, in December alone there has been a huge spur in the number of cases. Tope warned that If Covid appropriate behaviour and other related rules are not followed strictly, the numbers would continue to increase. There has been a meeting with the task force and the increasing number of Covid cses is certainly a matter of concern.

The Maharashtra government is all set to vaccinate children between the age of 15 years to 18 years. In a high level meeting it was decided that only Covaxin which is manufactured by Bharat biotech will be given to children. It has been decided to set up vaccination camps in colleges to reach out to all the eligible children.

Meanwhile the state government has also decided to take stern action against the violation of Covid protocol. The police and district administrations have been given all necessary orders for the same. The booster dose for senior citizens will be started by January 10, following the guidelines by the centre.


New restrictions have also been imposed to control the spread of Omicron. From 9 pm to 6 am, gatherings of five or more people in public places, restaurants, movies and theaters and gyms has been banned. Also to avoid crowds on New Year’s eve, celebrations are banned in public places. The new restrictions are effective from midnight on Friday.
