Lav Agarwal

The union government said on Thursday that it has extended Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for his central deputation to three months. Agarwal’s tenure was to end on 28 August 2021.

“The competent authority has approved the proposal of the Department of Health and Family Welfare for extension of the central deputation tenure of Shri Lav Agarwal, IAS (AP: 1996), Joint Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, for a period of three months beyond 28.08.2021 or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” said the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in a statement.


The 49-years-old belongs to the 1996 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi engineering graduate, his stints include working for various state governments prior to his appointment to the union health ministry in 2016. He has been the face of the union government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic and was seen addressing the media and conducting press conferences and briefings at the Press Information Bureau and the National Media Centre regularly. The B Tech Mechanical engineer also personally fought the battle against the novel coronavirus after being diagnosed with the deadly viral disease in August last year.
