The Indian Council of Medical Research or ICMR will initiate a survey next week for examining the effectiveness of AstraZeneca’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin vaccines in preventing the progression of the Covid-19 into a severe form. This will be the first-of-its-kind study since the launch of these vaccines in the country, news agency PTI reports.
ICMR’s Chennai-based National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) Senior Scientist Dr Tarun Bhatnagar has said that about 4,000 people in the age of 45 years and above who have got either one or both jabs of any of the two vaccines will be reviewed. “As a part of the study, we will take people who are COVID-19 positive and hospitalised and compare their vaccination status with those who have tested Covid negative. The aim is to assess how effective vaccination is in preventing the progression of the disease into a severe form,” he told PTI.
