The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), an autonomous society under the ministry of electronics & information technology (MeitY) is soft-launching MedTech – A Center of Excellence in Medial Electronics & Health Informatics in Lucknow and also introducing an Open Challenge Program on 14th August 2020. MedTech CoE at Lucknow is being set up by STPI & MeitY in collaboration with Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow, Department of IT & Electronics (Govt. of UP), Association of Medical Device Industry (AiMED) & Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ).

The soft-launch of “MedTech CoE” & “Open Challenge Programme” will be done digitally by Jyoti Arora, Special Secretary and Financial Advisor, MeitY-Govt of India, and Dr. Omkar Rai, Director General, STPI in the august presence of Alok Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of IT & Electronics, Govt. of UP, Padamshree Dr Saurabh Srivastava, Former Chairman of NASSCOM, Founder, Indian Angel Network and Chief Mentor, MedTech, Jitendar Sharma,CEO-AMTZ, R.K.Dhiman, Director- SGPGI-Lucknow, Sh. Rajiv Nath, Forum Coordinator-AiMED, Shri Rajneesh Agrawal, Director STPI Noida and Shri Subodh Sachan, Director STPI HQ.

The core objective of the CoE is to catalyse the transformation of the Life sciences & Healthcare industry for accelerated and sustained growth, to capture new business opportunities and markets and building solutions for real world challenges through co-creation programs. With an estimated budget of Rs 22 crores (22 million), the CoE will nurture 50 start-ups over a period of five years, stimulating R&D in medical electronics and health informatics while facilitating an entrepreneurial ecosystem to promote young innovators to create affordable, high-quality indigenous medical products, drive employment and contribute to the economy.

The CoE will come up on the PGI campus, with a built-up space of 18,000 sq. ft. This centre will leverage the deep research capabilities of PGI in areas of biostatistics and health informatics. There will also be seamless access to clinical trials of medical innovations. STPI, Lucknow, will play a crucial role in providing robust infrastructure, industry connect as well as mentoring and funding.

Dr. Omkar Rai, Director General, STPI asserts, “MedTech CoE at Lucknow will build a robust ecosystem to harness emerging technologies, foster R&D and innovation and nurture startups in the field of medical equipment/electronics & healthcare informatics to contribute to Make in India, Startup India and Digital India initiatives, while pushing the boundary of technologies in the healthcare domain.”

Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) is an autonomous society set up by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India in 1991, with the objective of encouraging, promoting and boosting the software exports from India. STPI offers a wide range of services to Indian IT industry including but not limited to Statutory, Datacom & Incubation services.

The export made by STPI registered units in Uttar Pradesh was in the tune of Rs 22725.65 crore during the FY 2019-20. In Uttar Pradesh, STPI has been functioning since 1992 and has expanded to three sub-centres in Lucknow, Kanpur and Prayagraj. Four more STPI Centres across the state are being developed at Meerut, Agra, Gorakhpur and Varanasi in collaboration with IT and Electronics department of Uttar Pradesh government.

In recent few years state capital of UP, Lucknow has come up as IT city, where the region has reached Rs.200 crore of IT/ITES export within a small period. Incubation services are also being provided to IT / ITES companies through these STPI centers. Under the India BPO Promotion Scheme of the Government of India, 15 companies have established BPO centres at 9 different places in the state, through which the local youth of these cities are getting employment.

Lucknow has also emerged as a Science City with numerous national level laboratories, premier medical colleges like SGPGI having focused research in biostatics and health informatics, KGMU etc. and many universities, engineering colleges like IET and institutes like IIM, IIIT. Hence MedTech CoE will be beneficial and contribute to the growth of the region, state and country in the field of medical technology.
