World Mental Health Day 2019

Every year, World Mental Health Day is celebrated on October 10. The day is observed with an objective to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. Besides, it provides an opportunity for everyone to talk and discuss mental health issues, and what further can be done in this regard.

The World Mental Health Day was first celebrated in 1992 after the initiative of Deputy Secretary-General Richard Hunter.

Role of WHO

Notably, the World Health Organisation (WHO) supports the World Mental Health Day by raising awareness on mental health issues. The body further supports the day by developing technical and communication material.

Theme of World Mental Health Day 2019

Unfortunately, millions of lives are lost every year due to mental health issues as a society is failing collectively to deal with such issues. The theme for the year 2019 is ‘Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention.’

Notably, World Mental Health Day was celebrated with a theme for the first time in the year 1994. This happened with the recommendation of then Secretary-General Eugene Brody. “Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World” – was the theme.
