HoneywellHoneywell has announced the launch of new lower-global-warming-potential (GWP) products for applications ranging from supermarket refrigeration to industrial cooling.

The new products expand Honeywells Solstice line of hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) refrigerants, blowing agents, aerosol propellants and solvents. Solstice products offer lower global warming potentials with similar or better cooling performance when compared to previous-generation products and they help customers comply with F-gas Regulation, Ecodesign and other European environmental regulations.

Each year, the world uses more than 100 thousand tonnes of refrigerant, enough to keep food fresh in 240,000 supermarkets and to cool more than 300,000 commercial buildings, said Julien Soulet,  business director for Honeywells Fluorine Products business in Europe, Middle East, Africa and India. Honeywell is committed to continuing to invest in the development and introduction of new offerings, to make it easier for industry to adopt and use alternatives to higher global warming potential refrigerants.

Honeywells offerings include:

· Solstice zd (R-1233zd): a nonflammable HFO refrigerant with a GWP equal to 1, for use in low pressure centrifugal chillers, which are most often used to cool large buildings. Trane, a leading air conditioner manufacturer, has already announced that it will use Solstice zd in its new Series E CenTraVac large capacity centrifugal chillers in Europe, the Middle East and other markets. Other applications include high temperature heat pumps and organic Rankine cycle.

· Solstice ze (R-1234ze): an HFO refrigerant that can be used in equipment that traditionally used R-134a (i.e., chillers, heat pumps, appliances and refrigeration equipment).  Solstice ze offers a GWP of less than 1, which is 99.9 percent lower than the GWP of R-134a. In field tests with chillers installed in supermarkets and with food service equipment, Solstice ze demonstrated nearly four percent better performance as compared to R-134a.

· Solstice N13 (R-450A): an HFO blend for chillers, medium-temperature applications such as supermarket display cases and self-contained refrigeration units that require a non-flammable refrigerant solution. Solstice N13 is designed to replace R-134a and offers a GWP that is 60 percent lower than the GWP of R134a. In laboratory and supermarket trials conducted, Solstice N13 demonstrated more than three percent lower energy consumption in medium-temperature applications as compared to R-134a in the same ambient temperature and humidity conditions.

· Solstice N40 (R-448A): an HFO blend for low- and medium-temperature refrigeration equipment such as supermarket freezer cases or transport refrigeration. Solstice N40 is designed to replace HCFC R-22 and HFC R-404A, both for new and retrofit, and offers a GWP that is 66 percent lower than R404A.  In supermarket trials conducted in the U.S. and Europe, Solstice N40 demonstrated three percent lower energy consumption in low-temperature applications and 5 to 16 percent lower energy consumption in medium-temperature applications as compared to R-404A.

In addition to its industry-leading Solstice line, Honeywells Fluorine Products business manufactures and supplies non-ozone-depleting Genetron refrigerants used by top air-conditioning, automotive and refrigeration equipment manufacturers worldwide, blowing agents for energy-efficient rigid foam insulation, and hydrofluoric acid and precursors for nuclear fuel.
