The recent spread of NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1) has raised new concerns. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines an HAI as a localised or systemic condition resulting from an adverse reaction to the presence of infectious agent(s) or its toxin(s). HAIs include surgical site infection (SSI), catheter associated bloodstream infection (CABSI), catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) etc.
