Cancer Day 2025

As nearly half of the working-age population is expected to be diagnosed with cancer, workplaces are becoming a critical pillar of support for employees facing the disease. In anticipation of World Cancer Day on 4 February, International SOS, a global leader in health and security risk management, emphasizes the need for organizations to proactively integrate a structured cancer support programme into their employee wellbeing strategy.

The prevalence of workplace-related cancers is on the rise, with regions like Central Europe and parts of Asia now reporting incidence rates similar to those in Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. However, many organizations remain unprepared to address this growing challenge. For instance, in the UK, a staggering 96% of companies lack dedicated cancer policies, and 77% of employees impacted by cancer find existing workplace benefits inadequate.

Recent data from International SOS (2022-2024) highlights breast cancer (28%) as the most frequent cancer-related assistance request among women, while prostate cancer (6.27%) ranks highest among men. These figures underscore the importance of targeted and accessible workplace support.

Dr. Vikram Vora, Medical Director at International SOS, notes, “India has witnessed a significant 13% rise in cancer cases between 2020 and 2025. Addressing this alarming trend requires a collective effort. Employers must prioritize continuous awareness regarding cancer risks and lifestyle factors, coupled with early detection through workplace screening programmes. These initiatives are crucial in mitigating risks and ensuring employees receive the necessary support to maintain their health and productivity.”

Organizations that recognize and address the specific needs of their workforce can implement effective cancer support programmes. This includes facilitating regular screenings, educational resources, and fostering an environment where employees feel empowered to discuss their health concerns openly. A proactive, inclusive approach to workplace cancer care not only benefits affected individuals but also enhances overall organizational resilience and efficiency.

The 5C’s of Cancer Workplace Support To help organizations build a strong cancer support framework, International SOS recommends the following key initiatives:

  1. Champion Awareness and Prevention
Educate employees on cancer risks, prevention strategies, and early detection through various channels, including workshops, seminars, internal communications, and educational materials.
  2. Care and Support
Offer comprehensive assistance throughout an employee’s cancer journey by providing access to screenings, medical support, counselling services, and flexible work arrangements to accommodate treatment schedules.
  3. Communication and Collaboration
Create a safe, non-judgmental workplace culture where employees can openly discuss their health concerns, diagnoses, and treatment plans without fear of discrimination.
  4. Conduct Workplace Assessments
Identify and address potential workplace hazards that may contribute to cancer risks, such as exposure to carcinogens. Additionally, mitigate risk factors like obesity, poor diet, and physical inactivity, which are associated with increased cancer susceptibility.
  5. Confidentiality and Respect
Establish clear policies to protect employee health information and ensure managers and supervisors are equipped to handle sensitive conversations with discretion and empathy.

By adopting these strategies, organizations can create a more supportive and inclusive workplace, ensuring employees facing cancer receive the assistance they need while contributing to overall workforce resilience and productivity.
