Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wipro GE HealthCare to establish a state-of-the-art Cancer Research and Innovation Centre. The new centre will focus on leveraging clinical research, cutting-edge technologies, and academic collaboration to enhance precision-led cancer treatment.

Under the partnership, TMC will serve as the clinical oncology partner, bringing its deep expertise in patient care and cancer research, while Wipro GE HealthCare will contribute as the technology partner, offering innovative medical imaging tools, AI-powered platforms, and digital healthcare solutions.

A Joint Working Group will be constituted to define core project priorities and lay out a structured roadmap for collaborative efforts over the next five years.

Rising Cancer Burden Underscores the Need for Innovation

The launch of this collaborative centre comes at a time when India is witnessing an alarming increase in cancer incidence. According to the National Cancer Registry Programme, the total number of cancer cases in India is expected to grow by 12.8% by 2025, compared to 2020. As of 2023, the number of new cancer cases exceeded 14 lakh, with nearly 100 cases per lakh population annually.

Commenting on the development, Dr. C.S. Pramesh, Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, emphasised the growing focus on structured interventions:

“The government is adopting a strategic, policy-driven approach to fight cancer with the establishment of day care centres, expansion of cancer care ecosystem, promoting cancer screenings and awareness programmes. However, early detection, equitable access and preventive care remain a challenge. Wipro GE HealthCare is a world leader in MedTech, and as partners, we aim to enhance clinical research and promote academic engagement to transform personalised cancer care for improved outcomes.”

Leveraging AI and Digital Technologies to Transform Cancer Care

The partnership aims to bring advanced, AI-enabled tools into the mainstream of India’s cancer care framework. This includes developing and validating medical imaging solutions, clinical workflow optimisation tools, and digital platforms for data management, visualisation, and analytics.

Chaitanya Sarawate, President and CEO, Wipro GE HealthCare South Asia, noted:
“In India, the estimated number of incidences of cancer cases was more than 14 lakhs in 2023. With oncology as a focus for us at Wipro GE HealthCare, globally, our innovations enable precision-led cancer care through an ecosystem of devices and digital solutions powered by AI. We are proud to partner with industry leaders like Tata Memorial Centre, who are among the leaders in the fight against cancer with their expertise in research, service and education, providing comprehensive cancer care to the last citizen.
With TMC, we will strengthen our commitment to deliver solutions that connect every step of cancer care, right from discovery, diagnosis to treatment, with the integration of advanced imaging technologies and AI-led solutions.”

Scope and Impact of the New Centre

This collaboration will not only support the development and testing of emerging medical technologies but also promote robust data-driven research. With access to well-annotated clinical datasets, the centre aims to build enterprise-level applications that streamline and strengthen the cancer care ecosystem.

The Centre will focus on:

  • AI-powered applications for medical imaging and diagnostics
  • Advanced image post-processing tools and visualisation software
  • Digitally integrated clinical workflows and health informatics systems
  • Annotated clinical data for research and AI training
  • Enterprise healthcare applications to enhance system-level efficiency

This initiative is expected to become a model for public-private collaboration in cancer research, bringing together the strengths of clinical institutions and healthcare technology leaders to address some of the country’s most pressing health challenges.
