In a revealing insight into workplace wellness, ekincare, India’s AI-powered digital health platform, has unveiled its latest “Wellbeing Index at India Inc.” report, shedding light on mental health engagement across corporate India. Based on data from over 45,000 employees across 90+ companies and 15+ industry sectors, the report highlights significant disparities in mental health usage patterns, especially along gender and generational lines.

Gender Gap in Mental Health Support

The most striking finding of the report is the disproportionate rate at which women are utilising mental health services. Despite making up only a quarter of the workforce, women account for over half of all mental health consultations. Their engagement rate (11.88%) stands nearly three times higher than that of their male counterparts (4.24%), indicating a greater openness among women to seek emotional and psychological support.

Younger Workforce Leading the Shift

The report also highlights a generational shift in mental health acceptance, with employees aged between 19–30—largely Gen Z—reporting the highest engagement levels. At a usage rate of 9.22%, this demographic is clearly breaking through traditional stigmas and showing greater comfort in addressing mental health challenges.

Stress Beyond the Workplace

Of the 2,095 mental health cases analysed, more than half were attributed to personal or emotional stress rather than workplace-related issues. This underlines the growing need for holistic wellness frameworks that extend beyond professional stressors and encompass an individual’s overall mental well-being.

Industry-Specific Insights

Healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors recorded the highest usage of mental health services, likely reflective of the demanding nature of their work environments and greater awareness around mental wellness. Conversely, employees aged 46 and above reported the lowest engagement rate at just 1.62%, suggesting the persistence of stigma or limited outreach among older professionals.

A Culture of Psychological Safety

Commenting on the findings, Dr. Noel Coutinho, Co-Founder and Chief Business Officer at ekincare, stated, “Mental health is no longer a peripheral conversation—it has become central to how organisations build trust, foster engagement, and sustain performance. While access to support services has certainly improved, their true impact depends on something deeper: organisational culture, leadership behaviour, and the ability to create psychologically safe environments. It’s not enough to simply offer resources; companies need to normalise their use and ensure employees feel genuinely comfortable seeking support. That’s when real change begins.”

The Path Forward

The report underscores that providing access to mental health support, while essential, is only the first step. Real progress requires companies to take deliberate action in creating an environment where mental wellness is embedded into the fabric of workplace culture. This includes leadership involvement, open dialogue, and strategies tailored to engage employees across diverse age groups.
