CureBay

CureBay, an innovative hybrid healthcare platform focused on serving rural India, has successfully raised $21 million in a Series B funding round. The investment was spearheaded by Bertelsmann India Investments, with continued backing from existing investors Elevar Equity and British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance institution.

Founded in 2021 by Priyadarshi Mohapatra, Shobhan Mohapatra, and Sanjay Swain, CureBay aims to bridge the critical gap in healthcare access for rural populations by blending physical clinics with a digital-first infrastructure. With over 150 eClinics currently operational across Odisha and Chhattisgarh, the platform offers an integrated suite of services, including doctor consultations, diagnostic testing, pharmacy deliveries, and referrals to tertiary care.

Scaling Rural Impact with Advanced Technology

The fresh infusion of capital will be strategically deployed to enhance CureBay’s proprietary technology stack, introduce AI-powered platform enhancements, and develop rural-first workflow automation tools. The company plans to scale operations across new geographies, including Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, states that remain underserved in terms of healthcare infrastructure.

Speaking about the company’s mission, Priyadarshi Mohapatra, Co-founder and CEO, stated, “Our core focus is solving the problem of access, not affordability. Rural India is ready to pay for quality healthcare if made available conveniently and ethically. This funding marks a critical milestone in scaling our efforts to ensure timely and reliable care reaches remote communities.”

Concierge-Style Healthcare with Human Touch

CureBay’s unique offering lies in its hybrid care model that combines tech-driven services with a high-touch, human-centric approach. For patients referred to tertiary hospitals, the company provides concierge-style support, assigning a dedicated assistant who accompanies and navigates them through the complex healthcare system, similar to the role of a family physician. This addresses a deep-rooted issue in rural regions, where patients often avoid seeking care due to income loss, long travel times, and risks of being exploited by intermediaries.

“Patients are often tricked into paying for substandard services by unscrupulous brokers when they visit urban healthcare facilities,” Shobhan Mohapatra noted. “We’re changing that narrative by making the journey safer, simpler, and supported end-to-end.”

Strong Unit Economics and Sustainable Growth

CureBay’s business model has demonstrated early success in financial sustainability. Its “circle” clinic networks are operational clusters supported by logistics and local partnerships, achieving break-even within 18 to 20 months. Two of its flagship circles, in Balasore and Puri, have already attained operational profitability.

The platform has served over 550,000 unique patients to date and employs more than 1,000 local healthcare workers, dubbed Swasthya Mitras, further amplifying its community-centric model.

“CureBay stands apart in its ability to deliver the full continuum of care under one unified platform,” said Pankaj Makkar, Managing Director at Bertelsmann India Investments. “Our investment reflects confidence in their mission to reimagine healthcare delivery in Bharat by making quality care both accessible and affordable.”

Driving Preventive Healthcare at Scale

In an impressive feat, CureBay has transitioned over 100,000 rural individuals into a preventive care program through a subscription model, which is a segment that even urban healthcare providers have struggled to capture effectively. The program currently boasts 90,000 active users with a renewal rate exceeding 60%, indicating strong patient trust and long-term engagement.

“Preventive care in rural areas is often overlooked,” said Mohapatra. “But by creating awareness and building credibility, we’ve been able to onboard thousands onto a proactive health journey.”

Future Outlook: AI, Generative Tech & IoT

Looking ahead, CureBay plans to continue leveraging frontier technologies, including artificial intelligence, generative AI, and IoT-powered diagnostics, to deliver early detection and patient management tools tailored for rural populations. These innovations are expected to significantly boost operational efficiency and help scale the model further across India.

With a deep understanding of rural healthcare psychology and an ecosystem approach to service delivery, CureBay is positioning itself as a transformative force in India’s healthcare landscape.
