In a landmark move set to redefine diagnostic excellence in India and beyond, Apollo Diagnostics has launched its state-of-the-art Digi-Smart Central Reference Laboratory (CRL) in Chennai. This next-generation facility marks a pivotal advancement in laboratory automation and precision diagnostics, further solidifying Apollo’s leadership in healthcare innovation.
Spanning 45,000 square feet, the fully automated laboratory integrates five major diagnostic disciplines—clinical Chemistry, Immunoassay, Serology, Haematology, and Hemostasis—into a unified, AI-powered, and robotics-driven system. This holistic setup aims to boost diagnostic speed and ensure 100% accuracy in test results—a crucial metric in delivering timely and informed patient care.

With the capability to process over 100,000 samples per day, the CRL positions itself as a central hub catering to healthcare providers across India and Southeast Asia. Initially capable of handling 25,000 samples daily, the facility is set to scale its operations in phases, doubling to 50,000 and eventually achieving full capacity.

“Our Digi-Smart Lab represents a paradigm shift in diagnostic efficiency and accuracy. Apollo is at the forefront of pioneering innovation; the true power of this Digi-Smart Lab lies in its holistic approach. We have Digi automation and AI to streamline our processes and ensure the highest levels of accuracy. By seamlessly combining five key laboratory disciplines with advanced automation, this lab delivers faster, more accurate results, directly translating to better patient outcomes,” said Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Founder and Chairman, Apollo Hospitals.

Technology Driving Transformation
The CRL stands out for its integration of advanced robotics, high-definition cameras, proprietary algorithms, and machine learning technologies. These tools not only optimise workflow efficiencies but also mitigate human error, significantly enhancing clinical reliability. This results in a dramatic 60% reduction in laboratory sample turnaround time (TAT)—a benchmark-setting achievement in the diagnostic industry.
“The launch of the Digi-Smart Central Reference Laboratory marks a pivotal step towards the future of diagnostics, where precision, speed, and technology converge to empower patient care. We believe that every innovation must ultimately translate into better outcomes for those we serve. Through automation, artificial intelligence, and integrated excellence, we are reaffirming our commitment to build a healthier tomorrow, starting with diagnostics at its core,” said Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals.
The Digi-Smart Lab also offers a comprehensive test menu of over 3,000 diagnostic services, including advanced disciplines such as microbiology, flow cytometry, histopathology, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology, and medical genetics. It will also include clinical genomics services, featuring comprehensive carrier screening for inherited diseases and extensive cancer screening panels.
Commitment to Quality and Global Standards
To uphold global diagnostic standards, the CRL will undergo rigorous clinical laboratory proficiency testing (PT) programs and regular quality control (QC) reviews, and is set to obtain both national and international accreditations. This commitment reinforces Apollo Diagnostics’ pledge to deliver trusted and consistent results at scale.
“Today, we proudly inaugurate the Apollo Diagnostics Central Reference Laboratory in Chennai — a pivotal step in our journey to make high-quality diagnostics faster, more accessible, and affordable for every Indian. This state-of-the-art facility is more than just a laboratory; it is a testament to our belief that every diagnosis is a doorway to better care. With cutting-edge technology and an unyielding commitment to precision, we are here to deliver trusted results with speed — empowering both doctors and patients to make informed decisions, faster,” said Dr. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals.
Emphasising the strategic vision, Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, shared that the organisation will also venture into high-end genomics as part of its broader innovation roadmap.
“Diagnostics is the strongest arm of the delivery of healthcare,” noted Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals, highlighting that 70% of clinical decisions rely on accurate diagnostics—a statement that underscores the critical role of laboratories in modern healthcare delivery.
A Catalyst for India’s Diagnostic Revolution
From an industry perspective, Apollo’s Digi-Smart Lab is a game-changing initiative that will ripple across the healthcare industry. For hospitals, diagnostic service providers, and health-tech innovators, this facility sets a new gold standard for lab automation, turnaround time, scalability, and reliability.
For healthcare professionals, faster diagnostics mean earlier interventions, better disease management, and improved patient outcomes. For diagnostic chains and startups, the CRL opens doors for partnerships and integrations that can help scale operations without compromising on quality.
By leveraging its infrastructure to serve pan-India and Southeast Asian markets, Apollo Diagnostics is not only meeting domestic demands but also positioning India as a hub for global diagnostic excellence.
“Every diagnosis is a doorway to better care,” echoed Dr. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals, capturing the essence of this groundbreaking initiative.
Apollo Diagnostics’ Digi-Smart CRL is more than just a new lab—it’s a flagship for India’s diagnostic future, powered by technology, automation, and a commitment to healthcare excellence. As the diagnostic landscape undergoes rapid transformation, initiatives like these will be key to building a smarter, faster, and more accurate healthcare delivery system for the billion-plus lives it serves.
