In a groundbreaking study published in The Lancet Digital Health, a team of researchers from the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, alongside colleagues from Stanford University and Columbia University, have unveiled an artificial intelligence (AI) tool capable of accurately predicting patient outcomes following various surgical procedures.
The study, which incorporated data from patients across three prominent healthcare systems – Cedars-Sinai, Stanford, and Columbia – focused on individuals who underwent a range of surgeries. These included open heart surgery, other significant surgical interventions, and minimally invasive procedures involving catheters or endoscopes.

At the core of this innovation is the AI model’s unique application of pre-operative electrocardiograms (ECGs), a test dating back to the late 1800s. Electrocardiograms, which involve placing electrodes on the skin to monitor the heart’s electrical activity, are standard in assessing heart function. In this study, the AI was trained to detect patterns and associations within the ECG waveforms before the surgery and correlate them with post-operative outcomes.

The findings were significant. While most patients were classified as low risk by the algorithm, those identified as high risk exhibited an almost 9-fold increase in the probability of post-operative mortality. This breakthrough in predictive analysis offers a new dimension in pre-operative evaluation, potentially transforming patient care in surgical settings.
The use of AI in this capacity marks a significant stride in the intersection of technology and healthcare, offering a nuanced approach to risk assessment and patient management. As AI continues to evolve, its integration into medical practices like this demonstrates the potential for improved outcomes and more personalised patient care.
