mission indradhanushMission Indradhanush was launched on 25th December 2014 by the Union Health Minister JP Nadda with the motive to immunise all the children under the age of two years.

Primarily, it was adopted to boost the process of immunisation by covering five per cent or more children every year to achieve full coverage by 2020.

Objectives

It is aimed to cover all those children who have been either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated by the end of 2020. Also termed as Indias Universal Immunisation Program (UIP), it is destined to provide free vaccines against 11 life-threatening diseases to 26 million children every year.  This is free of cost across the nation against the following diseases: Tuberculosis, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, Hepatitis B, Pneumonia, Measles, and more.

Implementation Process

  • Mission Indradhanush Yojana has been derived through a catch-up campaign mode where the aim is to identify all children who have been missed out during the immunisation campaign.
  • ORS packets and zinc tablets have been distributed for use in the case of severe diarrhea or dehydration and vitamin A doses are administered to boost every childs immunity.

Coverage area

1.48 crore children and 38 lakh pregnant women have already covered in the first and second phase of the program. In this figure, around 39 lakh children and 20 lakh women have been completely immunised.

21.3 lakh sessions have been organised across the nation in the high and mid priority districts and more than 3.66 crores antigens were administered.

28.7 lakh immunisation sessions were conducted in the third phase and covered about 2.1 crore children, of which 55 lakh were completely immunised.

Along with 55.9 lakh pregnant women that were given the tetanus toxoid vaccine across the 497 districts.

Focus area

Mission Indradhanush aimed to cover 201 high priority districts in the first phase, 297 in the second phase in 2015 and 216 districts in phase three during 2016.

On the aimed districts, the mission focused particularly on the high-risk settlements identified by the polio eradication program. These areas were the lowest coverage due to factors like”Demography, Geography, and other operational challenges.

Strategy of Indradhanush Yojana

It will be a national immunisation ambition to strengthen key functional areas of immunisation to ensure universal coverage across the country, particularly special attention to the unprivileged districts with low coverage.

This strategy includes four basic elements:

  • Conduct informative sessions at every level
  • Establish effective communication channels and social mobilization efforts
  • Establish a task force at every level and make them accountable to intensified mission Indradhanush
  • Comprehensive training of the health officials and active workers.
