The Central government has issued guidelines to insurance companies to allow patients of ayurvedic hospitals insurance cover for 20 different kinds of ailments.

Patients at Central and state government hospitals, ayurvedic hospitals accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) or registered with a government authority will be eligible for health cover, Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik told the Rajya Sabha recently.

As per the guidelines, 20 different kinds of ailments can be included in a health insurance scheme, which have been benchmarked on the basis of cost of therapies. This will allow insurance companies to calculate treatment expenditure to settle a claim.

The guidelines were framed after consultations among Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), Ayurvedic Hospitals Association and insurance companies.

The government plans similar guidelines to be issued “soon” for Unani, Siddha, Yoga, Naturopathy and Homeopathy, the minister said.
