The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday inaugurated a two-day workshop on Health Management Information System (HMIS) in Chandigarh to promote use of information technology tools for effective planning.

Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary Health, Punjab, said the state government was rigorously using HMIS data for effective planning as she stressed upon the importance of capturing health data in the right manner. Giving an example, she said that with the help of HMIS data Punjab had been able to identify certain pockets of home deliveries and accordingly a strategy had been devised to curtail the practice.

The workshop is being attended by representatives from nine states and UT’s.

Addressing the participants, Mahajan added that Punjab has also effectively used IT technology in health services like E-Aushadhi to monitor drug supply management and the dengue App for review and information of dengue treatment facilities.

HMIT is defined as an interdisciplinary study of the design, development, adoption and application of IT-based innovations in healthcare services encompassing delivery, management as well as planning.
