The survey study titled Maternal Mortality in India: 1997-2003, Trends, Causes and Risk Factors, shows that overall MMR [maternal mortality ratio, which means number of maternal deaths to women (in the age group 15-49 years) per 1 lakh live births to women (in the age group 15-49 years)], which was nearly 400 in the year 1997-98, has declined to about 300 in the year 2001-03, thus registering a decline of 24 per cent during this period based on SRS data.

SRS (Sample Registration System) is the largest demographic sample survey done in India and is being used to provide direct estimates of maternal mortality through a nationally representative sample. The Sample Registration System (SRS) has been a continuous source of information on fertility and mortality indicators including inter alia infant, child and female mortality since its inception in 1971. The present Report titled Maternal Mortality in India: 1997-2003, Trends, Causes and Risk Factors, provides estimates of maternal mortality for the period 1997-2003. Based on nearly 4500 maternal deaths for the periods 1997-1998, 1999-2001 and 2001-2003, the Report gives trends in maternal mortality in recent years. The survey study shows that overall MMR which was nearly 400 in the year 1997-98, has declined to about 300 in the year 2001-03, thus registering a decline of 24 per cent during this period based on SRS data. Nearly two-thirds of maternal deaths occur in the states of Bihar and Jharkand, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. The leading causes of maternal death have been, haemorrhage (38%), sepsis (11%), and abortion (8%). Howver, gender discrimination, poverty (access to income and non-income resources) and lack of education among women can be other factors behind the high MMR in these states. Maternal mortality rate means number of maternal deaths to women (in the age group 15-49 years) per 1 lakh living women (in the age group 15-49 years). For more info, go to: www.censusindia.net
